Ball Canning Literature
As you can imagine, Ball produced a lot of canning literature over many years! I
am still finding new pieces all the time. Let me know if you have something that
is not on this list.
- Ball Blue Ribbon Cookbook
- Ball Canning and Freezing Recipes,
1952
- Ball Freezer Book, 1973
- Ball Freezer Book, 1974
- Ball Freezer Book, 1976
- Ball Glass Jars, booklet (photo courtesy of Jeff Harper)
- Ball Home Canners Giftbook,
front back
- Ball Home Canning and Freezing
Methods, green cover, undated
- Ball Home Canning and Freezing
Methods, pink cover (photo courtesy
of Jeff Harper), Jeff also makes this note: Has a printer's
code of 56, indicating 1956 I think, and this is consistent with the Blue book advertised
for 25 cents.
- Ball Jars the World Over, fold-out
sheet, undated
- Ball Ready Reference Chart, 25
cents (photo courtesy of Jeff
Harper) Jeff also makes this note: The Ball Ready Reference Charts can be dated
by the cost of the advertised Blue book (25 cents - 1949 to 1962; 35 cents - 1963
to 1971) and by the Ball Logo (which changed at the same time the Blue book went
to 35 cents). I'm not sure when they changed from Box 5 to Box 2005, but since neither
address has a ZIP code, they can be dated to before 1967 when all bulk mailers were
required to use ZIP codes, and maybe even before 1963 when ZIP codes were first
introduced.

Poultry, brown cover, undated, also has additional insert for ordering Ball

- How to Can Meat Game and Poultry,
orange cover, undated, also has additional insert for ordering Ball Blue Book or
obtaining info on Ball Pressure Cooker
- How to Can Meat Poultry Game
and Fish, multi-color, (photo
courtesy of Jeff Harper) Jeff also makes this note: Undated but shows zinc caps
and advertises a 10 cent Blue book so is probably from 1946-47 (the text seems better
edited than the yellow cover, so I'm pretty sure it is later than the yellow cover).
The same goes for How to Can Fruits and Vegetables (blue cover) - it looks to be
from around 1946-47.
- How to Can Meat Poultry
Game and Fish, yellow cover,
(photo courtesy of Jeff Harper) Jeff also makes this note: Undated but between 1943
and 1946 because of the statement "The Government granted no zinc for making
jar caps in 1943. We shall make them for you again when we are permitted to use
zinc for that purpose." It also advertises a 10 centBlue Book.
