These books were typically used by home canners as a reference during the canning
process and are often found completely worn out and stained! It is not unusual to
find one with the cover missing. The books before 1913 are very scarce - these are
variations of the first edition ("A"). The first few editions ("A"
to "D") did not show an edition letter inside the book. The
Minnetrista museum has one example of each of the early ones. Dick Cole
(curator at the museum and Ball researcher) has studied these first books very carefully
and has come up with a classification for them, and I use his letter designations
here. Jeff Harper (another serious Ball collector) has identified three types of
edition "C", and I use his type identifiers here (the recipe text varies
slightly between the types). The picture of the 1974 "Libro Azul" edtion
comes from Jeff also. It is a challenge to gather all of the later books just because
